Give Thanks for Clear Drains: Your Pre-Thanksgiving Plumbing Prep Guide

ree

A few reminders to help you have

a worry-free Thanksgiving?

Your Pre-Thanksgiving Plumbing Prep Checklist

Follow these simple steps to ensure a smooth, clog-free holiday weekend and avoid the infamous "Brown Friday" emergency!

In the Kitchen:

  • Dispose of grease properly: Never pour cooking oil or grease down the sink drain. Pour it into an old can or jar, let it cool and solidify, and then toss it in the trash.

  • Scrape plates thoroughly: Scrape food scraps into the garbage can before rinsing dishes. Even a garbage disposal has limits!

  • Be mindful of the disposal do-nots: Avoid putting fibrous vegetables (celery, onion skins), potato peels, starches (rice, pasta), or coffee grounds into the disposal.

  • Run plenty of cold water: Always run cold water before, during, and for at least 30 seconds after using your garbage disposal.

In the Bathroom:

  • Keep a wastebasket handy: Make sure there is a trash can easily accessible for guests to dispose of items like cotton swabs, wipes, feminine hygiene products, or hair.

  • Remind guests: Only flush toilet paper: Place a friendly, small sign in the guest bathroom as a gentle reminder that only toilet paper should ever be flushed down the toilet. Even "flushable wipes" are a no-no!

  • Check for small leaks: Take a moment to check under sinks and around toilet bases for any slow leaks or drips. Fix them now before a busy house turns a small drip into a bigger problem.

General Home Prep:

  • Know your shut-off valve locations: In a pinch, knowing where your main water shut-off valve is (and your individual fixture valves) can prevent major water damage.

  • Keep our number handy: Put our number on the fridge or in your phone—just in case you need a holiday hero!
