Florida Wildlife & Your Plumbing

What You Should Know

Living in the Sunshine State means sharing your space with some pretty wild neighbors—frogs, snakes, and yes, even the occasional alligator. While most of us expect to see these critters in our backyards or local parks, it’s a bit more surprising (and alarming!) when they show up in our plumbing.

Florida’s warm, wet climate makes it a haven for wildlife, and your home’s plumbing can sometimes become an unexpected entry point. Frogs and snakes can slip through small cracks or open vents, and in rare cases, alligators have been known to find their way into storm drains and emerge in places they definitely don’t belong.

So, how can you keep your pipes critter-free?

  • Install drain covers: Mesh or grate-style covers on outdoor drains can block unwanted visitors.

  • Seal entry points: Check for cracks or gaps around pipes and seal them with caulk or expanding foam.

  • Use toilet lids: It may sound silly, but keeping the lid down can prevent a surprise encounter.

  • Maintain your yard: Trimmed grass and cleared debris discourage wildlife from nesting near your home.

While these encounters are rare, a little prevention goes a long way. If you ever suspect an animal has made its way into your plumbing, call a professional—both My Personal Plumber and, if needed, animal control.

Stay safe, stay curious, and remember in Florida, even your pipes might need a wildlife plan!
